The city is perhaps best known for its rich history. Abilene was founded in 1857 and served as a stagecoach and cattle town in the second half of the 19th century. It was the end of the Chisholm Trail, the route used by cowboys driving cattle from Texas to railheads in Kansas. The town was named after Abilene, Texas, which was the terminus of the original Chisholm Trail.
