Location

Ayer is located in the heart of Massachusetts, in the Nashoba Valley, which is roughly 25 miles northwest of Boston. It is also 12 miles southeast of Nashua, New Hampshire, and 12 miles northwest of Groton. The town is situated along Route 2, just east of Route 3.

History

In 1667, the first European settlement in Nashoba valley, where Ayer now stands, was made. The site was originally known as "Nashobah," which means "place between waters." The town, which was initially a part of Groton, was formed in 1714 and named after Dr. John Ayer, a local resident who donated generously to the town.

Ayer is known as the birthplace of the military tank. In 1917, the Army selected General Electric, which had been experimenting with gasoline-electric drive systems for submarines, to create a large number of track-laying machines for use in World War I as America entered the conflict. The Army gave the task the cover name "Project 1794," while the tanks themselves received the name "tanks" because the project's cover name sounded similar to "tank."'

Ayer was home to the hospital for the Northeast Province of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The district headquarters of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, whose members are frequently called Christian Brothers, were also located in Ayer. The buildings were once home to a novitiate, a juniorate, a scholasticate, an elderly care facility, and a formation house for men training to become brothers.
