Channelview is a city located in Harris County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 U.S. census, the population was 38,708. Channelview was founded in 1946 as a rural farm community.
Many houses were built in the area by the 1950s, surrounding the sprawling Channelview plant of the Gulf Oil Refining Company, which closed in 1955. The first post office in Channelview opened in 1954. Channelview was regarded as a distinct neighborhood by the 1960s and was considered part of the Sheldon, Texas, community.
In 1970 Channelview residents tried to break away from the North Sheldon Independent School District and incorporate their community. However, they failed to get legislative approval. Channelview residents tried again to incorporate their community in the 1980s, but they were opposed by the Sheldon school district, which denied that Channelview still existed; the attempt failed.
In 1992, Channelview was still described as part of Sheldon. However, on October 1, 1993, the community was successfully incorporated. The town's first mayor was Frank J. Ingolia.
In 2019, Channelview was featured in the podcast LISK, as it was revealed that serial killer Joel Rifkin told police that one of his victims was from Channelview.
